Bob Long receives NCSS Soil Scientist of the Year Award.

Robert (Bob) Long, MLRA Project Leader, St. Johnsbury, VT, receives the National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS) Soil Scientist of the Year Award.

According to the Call for Nomination, the purpose of this annual award is to recognize exceptional achievement of a NCSS soil scientist, including significant advancement in mapping techniques, exceptional management in soil survey resources, excellent work in recruiting and training staff, and exceptional contribution to innovations in concept, techniques, and project that have significantly enhanced the art and science of soil survey.

Bob is a pioneer of knowledge-based digital soil mapping. He has been the leader of the NRCS-sponsored project in which ArcSIE evolved into the production mode, and was successfully applied to an actual NCSS soil survey, the initial mapping in Essex County, Vermont.

His colleagues acclaim him to be a ¡°day-to-day example¡± for his leadership, technical ability, and more importantly, dedication.
